The Darkside

Here's a clip of Pete "the forgotten Spaceman" Bassman's band after Spacemen 3. Yeah, yeah - it does sound a bit like late Spacemen 3, but so does Spiritualized and Spectrum; so fuck you, bitch.

A Nice Walk In The Park

Oh I almost forgot! The other day me and Brandon were walking through San Diego's beautiful Balboa Park. Yeah we were just cruising through when we both decided it was time to locate the facilities, you know? Urinate and stuff. Anyways we walked in to the nice public restrooms and walked in on a big hulk of a man taking a shit.

Black Tambourine

I just bought one of these god damned cds yesterday. Sometimes you just gotta bite the bullet, you know? Not everything is going to be available on lp, 7" or 12". Some of these god damned things were never even ON vinyl, bless their hearts. So I had to have this music by this fantastically remarkable band, Black Tambourine. It's their complete recordings, which sadly is only ten jam cuts. TEN JAM CUTS. Anyway, this fabulous foursome were from D.C. and handled their business between the years 89-91. They only played a few shows before disbanding, but in that short time I believe they made magic. You know those genres, C86, indie pop and twee? Well that's what this shit is. Below you will find a really cool video for one of their songs, "Throw Aggi Off The Bridge".

'Slims / Carrots / F Magic

Man oh man oh manomanoman. Last night was a doozy. Just pure magic. It was like as good as it gets. Last night, here in San Diego, I set up a nice little thing. Not only did we have The Carrots from Austin visiting, but we had our best friends The Muslims for a homecoming AND a live recording. Fantastic magic was also in pure magic form. Engineers Ben Moore and Mitch Wilson did an amazing job on the recording. Even the sound check practice recording was worthy of release. You Muslims fans are in for a nice treat. Look for it to be released in a speedy fashion too. No b.s.

But let's take a minute to chat about The Carrots shall we? Madre de dios these fuckers are good. 4 gals and two dudes. The most refreshing thing I've seen live in a whiles. I've enjoyed their music for months now, but to see them live was better than I thought it could be. Everyone in the room was blown away. Their choice in covers was great too!! They played one of my all time favorite songs, Breakaway by Irma Thomas. I blogged about that song a while back, remember? Anyways, if these jokers come into your town on this tour, don't fuck yourself over and miss it. You'll feel like a total boner for doing so.

That's it. I just had to share some thoughts.

The first release under this new deal is Abe Vigoda's new lp/cd Skeleton, due July 8.

The Toys

I am one lucky ass duck. I bought the loveliest record today and I'm thrilled. The Toys 1967 lp "The Toys Sing A Lover's Concerto And Attack". This is one of the best records I've ever, ever heard. These young gals ruled with this lp and the singles that followed. In fact they gave the frickin' Supremes a run for their money, getting to number 2 on the charts with only D. Ross and the gals above them. Check out how cute and nervous they look in the video below. Is it ok to say cute? It seems weird rolling off my fingers. Anyway, the point is this gem of a record is now mine. 'Nuff said.

Two lil' side notes. How weird is that big jaw in the background? A little tie in to the Attack lyric, weird. Also if those god damned juicy melodies sound familiar, it's because they had the same song writing team behind Frankie Valli And The Four Seasons. Although nobody seems to think ol' Frankie is cool, the fool had songs man.

Oh! One more side note. The first track is the original version of Can't Get Enough Of You Baby, that was ruined by Smash Mouth. How UGLY was that fat cat anyway?

Lil' Poppa

I'm going to start a new feature on here. Something about old shit that needs to be remembered and appreciated every now and again. Some kind of blast from the past type shit. Not necessarily "breaking news" or some kind of discovery, just a reminder. A lil' something to make you feel good, know what I'm saying? I'll have to think of title for it. But until then, here's my first shit. Christopher Wallace aka Biggie Smalls aka Notorious B.I.G. aka Big Poppa at age 17 reducing an adult to shameful levels.

Completely old news.

Remember when Phil Donahue went on Bill O'Reilly's show and tore him a new a-hole? It's been years now, but it's still as entertaining and relevent as ever. US death-toll has more than doubled since this airing; Iraqi death-toll is near genocidal; Bill O'Reilly is still waving the same flag. Watching ol' Phil verbally reduce Bill does the body good. I wake up in the morning, take my vitamins and watch this clip before I do my long shift down at the office. No homo, but Phil here kinda gives me a hard-bone. His brass balls in the face of that massive-headed fuck are to be commended. ( Have you noticed how large Bill O'Reilly's head is? He looks like Morrissey on 'roids. ) I don't mean to develop activity in the pants, but I can't help it.

New Bloods' Doubles Video

Oh snap New Bloods made a video for the song Doubles off the new fantastic lp, The Secret Life. This is brand spankin' new!

Vivian Girls

Photobucket
I don't know if I'm late on these gals or what, but I just discovered them for myself and they're perfect. Perfectly seasoned pop gems encased in a tortilla of feedback and noise. I wish every band I ever discover could remind me of the Crystals, the Ramones and Jesus and Mary Chain all at the same time. Perfect.

Do youself a favor and go to myspace.com/viviangirlsnyc and listen to "Wild Eyes".

Proof

Proof that a ridiculously looking gal can be responsible for a ridiculously purdy jam cut.

The Cookies' Chains 45

My dear friend Charles just bought this here 45 the other day, and man o man is it the jam. Chains by The Cookies. The Beatles covered this song on Introducing The Beatles. Catchy little number I tell you. Nice little fuckin' tune kemo sabe. Which reminds me of how great Rooky Ricardo's is in San Francisco. I'll be in there in a few days spending wads of cash on little fucking god damned gems like this here jam track.
