Dada With Juice, The Orange Juice VHS Tape

Speaking of tapes, I love to be in possession of a great VHS tape that never made it to dvd. Among them are Metallica's Cliff 'Em All, Morrissey's Hulmerist, Decline Of Western Civilization Pts. 1 & 2, Traci Lords pornos, etc. Anyway, one of the ones I would love to own is Orange Juice's Dada With Juice. It has all their videos and some tv crap. You love Orange Juice? Well you should.

Here's a fave from the collection. Video number 5, Simply Thrilled Honey.

P.S. Star Wars VHS don't count. I mean, at least I don't care about them.

Saturday Night 03/01/08 In San Diego

Go dancing, have fun.

The Dog's Bollocks

You know what's the dog's bollocks? Cassettes. I think I'm in love. Hey Thurston Moore still loves them, so I can't be too off the mark. In fact, I believe it's the next level of complete sound right after vinyl. And they're cute. Anyway, I've been buying them like crazy. I just found a Can "Tago Mago" cassette. I never even knew it CAME OUT on cassette. It's super cute, too, by the way. I've found a ton of Morrissey and Smiths cassettes too. The La's, Sex Pistols, Stooges. You know what tape really looks cool? Ready To Die by The Big Poppa, Biggie Smalls aka Notorious B.I.G. aka Christopher Wallace.

Compact, inexpensive, personal...perfect.

So not only am I immersing myself in cassette culture, I'm putting my money where my fucking mouth is. Art Fag will embark on putting out a cassette series this year. Not giving any details, but stay tuned, as it will be special. Go find your Walkman, you won't want to be left out. Make sure it has auto reverse, too.

Thank Heaven Missy's Back

Poor Missy has kind of been a disappointment lately. She did that album w/o Timbaland and it kinda sucked. But now she's got these two Tim soundalike producers and the result is, how do you say, banging?

Mick Whitnall keeps getting cooler and cooler, the more I learn about him.

If you are one of the seven or so people who read this blog regularly, you may remember a few months back I posted a youtube clip of the band Skin Deep. Skin Deep was Mick Whitnall, of Babyshambles', band waaaaaay back in the '80's. And it fucking ruled. It sounded like Madness. Today, I accidently stumbled on another goddamned gem of Mick's.

Here's how my stupid youtube story goes. Completely bored at home, I decide, "Fuck it; why not check my myspace and email and perezhilton.com for the 23rd time today?" So I sat down and fired up the old itunes to keep me company while I wasted time on ye olde internet. I skimmed the old playlist and decided to listen to Teenage Fanclub's "Songs from Northern Britain". I exhausted all my stupid, regular websites and was so into what I was listening to that I decided to wikipedia Teenage Fanclub. Amongst other fun facts about the band (their first album was noisy??) I discovered that the song from the intro to Micheal Moore's "Bowling for Columbine" isn't actually Camper Van Beethoven doing "Take the Skinheads Bowling", but rather Fanclub covering Camper Van Beethoven.

With this little discovery, I decided to go to youtube and watch Camper Van Beethoven's video for the song. (Which is actually rad, btw. In the video they literally take skinheads bowling.) On the little sidebar of related video's I saw options for tons of fun skinhead clips. I clicked on one called "Skinheads in Carnaby Street London" cuz it looked coolest and maybe more vintage. It turned out to be a clip from a German news show. From what I could decipher, the program was letting viewers in on the history of skinhead, and how real skinhead culture comes from Mod and Jamaican rudeboy culture and all that. Anyway, at :38 seconds into the video, a very familiar face pops up. Mick Whitnall! Bear in mind, this video is from the very early nineties; at least fifteen years before he found fame with Babyshambles. Towards the end of the video, it makes like it's going to interview him or something and in German says something I translated to be something like, "Mick, singer of Jamaican ska style band, 100 Men." Right then, the video ended. With no "Part 2" to the original video offered, I had to look up 100 Men.

What I found was this most impressive video you'll find below. Good old Mick singing lead vocals in a rad rocksteady sounding band. He didn't sing lead in Skin Deep, so this was my first time hearing his doggone voice at the forefront. What a badass, no?

So, anyway, while a lot of guys my age are busy completing medical school, or cooking dinner for their kids, or wrapping it up at the law firm; this is what I do with my time.

2-22-08 UPDATE: I probably should have addressed how everyone in this band besides Mick and the drummer are complete tools. ESPECIALLY the bass player. My bad. How about when either Mick or the drummer aren't on screen, you just close your eyes and enjoy the music?

Heavy Metal In Baghdad

This movie looks amazing. It's about Acrassicauda (Latin for “Black Scorpion”), a heavy metal band from Baghdad, Iraq. When Saddam Hussein's regime was toppled they thought their dream to "mutha fuckin' rock" was becoming reality. Whoopsie!! Insurgency. Civil war and bloodshed. Vice went into Iraq to film this. We'll be screening this soon in San Diego, so stay tuned. Check out this preview.

You can read more about Acrassicauda and donate some much needed skrill at this website:

A.C.A.B.

"I'm not 'Man', and I'm not 'Dude'; I'm Officer Rivieri!" Check out this total butthole assault and tongue-lash a 14 year old skateboarder. This reminds me of being 14 and getting sweated by the cops for skateboarding. Jeez....

The Black Lips Bandwagon

I hate to get on some kind of bandwagon, but The Black Lips were phenomenal last night. I went to The Casbah to see them and it was great! The energy in the sold out place was super high. Everyone seemed thrilled to be there. I love shows like that. When they came on, the place was seriously electric. As raucous as their sound and show is what I liked about them most is their guitars didn't have to blare to sound noisy and raw. Guitarists that crank their volume and have no control are the worst to me. The Black Lips sounded perfect. I've never heard their records, ha. Am I the last? I don't really give a care though. I will now. In fact, I think the best way to be turned on to a band is by seeing them live so fuck you holmes.

Second highlight of the night by the way was seeing a full grown adult man be man handled by the bouncer and thrown out. nothing, I repeat, NOTHING is funnier than seeing a dude that's drank too much be thrown around like a rag doll. This guy's arms were all tangled in the air and his feet were dragging behind him, as he begged to not be thrown out. The best. I wish more people would have too much to drink and be thrown out during the first song of a show they paid over ten dollars for.

A Lover's Special - Valentine's Day 2008

Grab your gal or guy and come down to The Casbah in San Diego this Thursday. Cupid's gonna be there with all his arrows and stuff. There'll not only be a big show full of the finest live acts in the county, but we're gonna have a poloroid photo booth. I know, I know, you thinking how in the hell can they pull this off? Shoot. We got it going on, that's how. Poloroids for you and your god damned fucking boo. Isn't that special? And just for extra added bonus, we're offering slow jams between bands. Everything from Boyz II Men to Luther Vandross. You think that's enough? Well fuck you holmes cuz we gots more. After the live rock acts we're offering a no holds barred dance party. That's right baby bish, a full on "throw your hands in the air" type affair. So save up your shekels and plan on it. It's this Thursday and it starts early so don't be a loser. You'll be left outside with your god damned fucking boo looking like a god damned fucking chump.

Black Tights

Can girls wearing black tights be any hotter? No. Not that anyone cares but I think it might be the one thing I flip about. And shoes. Man oh man, if a lady has on black tights and the right shoes? Oh dear. I saw a gal last week with that rare combo and I swear I wanted to weep. I wanted to offer my commitment on a lifetime basis.

So from here on out this blog will be devoted to fashion sense for girls and how to reel in ol' Orduno.

Here's a pretty choice Alan McGee documentary:

Has anyone here ever spent a whole Saturday stoned, watching their ass get fatter as they scour youtube for hours like a useless piece of dog shit? Neither have I; but one of our "correspondents" did, and this is what he found.

A very choice documentary on Creation Records-founder, Jesus and Mary Chain-manager and Oasis-discoverer Alan McGee. Enjoy!

This Thursday @ Skull Kontrol we're having a listening party for the new Cat Power record, Jukebox. Jukebox will be played in it's entirety at 7pm with a "dollar off happy hour" (which takes place every M thru F @ Live Wire) and again at 9pm. We'll have cds to give away. Also we're going to have limited edition silver foil posters for ya. These posters are only going to be available on homegirl's upcoming tour and only a few were made up. Surely an ebay item in the making. What else we got....oh! just some stickers and postcards or whatever, courtesy of the fine folks at Matador Records.

After the album listening, count on having your ears all violated by the usual and unusual sounds of a Skull Kontrol club nite.

Jukebox tracklisting:

1. New York (Frank Sinatra)
2. Ramblin' (Wo)man (Hank Williams)
3. Metal Heart (Cat Power)
